Our Story

Our Team
Open Ocean in blue with waves

Our brands work across underwater sensing, sonar imaging, robotics, intervention and ocean data. Their technologies support demanding applications across defense, offshore energy, ocean science and marine construction.

The role of General Oceans is to help these companies grow. We provide investment, strategic guidance, operational support and access to wider group opportunities, while preserving the technical expertise, customer focus and identity that make each brand successful.

We respect the legacy behind the businesses that join us. Many of our companies were founder-led, built over decades and shaped by close relationships with their customers. As a long-term owner, General Oceans gives those brands the structure and support to keep developing, reach new markets and continue helping customers work more safely and effectively in complex ocean environments.

Nortek ADCP and DVL company at the start of the General Oceans story

How it all began

General Oceans grew out of the success of Nortek, the ADCP and DVL company founded by General Oceans President Atle Lohrmann in 1991.

What began as a small collaboration of founder-led ocean technology businesses has become a global underwater technology group. Today, General Oceans brings together specialist brands with shared expertise across sensors, sonar, robotics, vehicles and ocean data, supporting customers in more than 65 countries.
